The Gundel name gained international fame in the 1920s and 1930s, when it became a symbol of Hungarian hospitality. Artists, politicians and heads of state of the time regularly visited the restaurant in the heart of the City Park, which stood out not only for its elegance but also for its special gastronomic offer.
One of the highest accolades came in 1937, when King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy visited Hungary and entrusted Károly Gundel with the organization of the State Banquet in Székesfehérvár - a sign of the highest level of protocol trust.
Two years later, in 1939, the Gundel reached another milestone: it became the official restaurant of the Hungarian pavilion at the New York World's Fair.
The Gundel kitchen has also been an outstanding success on US soil - The New York Times praised their role:
"The Gundel restaurant is a bigger, better advertisement for Budapest than a boatload of tourist brochures."
In the international press, Károly Gundel has been referred to as the “Hungarian Brillat-Savarin” - a reference to the world-famous French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. This metaphor perfectly expressed the extent to which Gundel contributed to the worldwide recognition of Hungarian gastronomy.
