1860 - The Zoo and Gundel Restaurant: Treasures of the City Park
From the end of the 1860s, it was the restaurant of János Klemens, who rented the building, which resembled a country classicist mansion, from the Zoo. In the meantime, the City Park was being developed and in 1866 the zoo took shape. An indoor zoo restaurant was the first to be designed for guests visiting the City Park. In 1888, a major turnaround came when Ferenc Wampetics took over and turned it into the most popular restaurant of its time. The golden age of the City Park came during the millennium: the 1896 Millennium Exhibition attracted nearly six million visitors, and the catering industry was upgraded accordingly.
