The Hungarian capital is home to countless special venues where you can enjoy a good meal and a drink with guests who have travelled from afar.
Whenever we host friends from abroad in Budapest, it’s always a real challenge to choose activities and places to eat that will truly make their time with us memorable. That is precisely why this collection has been put together to be extremely diverse: ranging from traditional Hungarian hospitality with a long history, through modern, bakeries following international trends and bustling entertainment venues, right through to the green oases of Buda and rooftop terraces offering breathtaking panoramic views – we offer the perfect suggestion for every occasion and style.
Gundel Restaurant and Café
Gundel is the most famous Hungarian restaurant with the longest history. In the heart of the City Park, in a setting that is in itself impressive and unique, visitors can experience tradition and genuine elegance. Yet, despite the restaurant’s prestige and international reputation, it is by no means aloof; rather, it is characterised by excellent, warm hospitality.
One of Gundel’s most exciting and professionally significant features is the unique „Nemzeti 11” collection of dishes, which showcases the most iconic and important dishes of Hungarian cuisine through the Gundel family’s carefully guarded legacy of recipes.
This is a series of dishes which enables guests travelling from afar to gain a clear, comprehensive and high-quality insight into the true character of traditional Hungarian cuisine in a very short space of time. It is no coincidence that, over the decades, Gundel has hosted countless international celebrities, renowned artists, politicians and prominent public figures, many of whom have become regulars over the years.
However, it is not just the premium flavours served up on their plates that make for an unforgettable experience; the unmistakable atmosphere is also an integral part of it. At Gundel, live music accompanies every meal. Alongside the pleasant sound of the piano playing in the background, a professional four-piece gypsy band also takes to the stage.
Alongside the splendour of the interiors, the Gundel garden – which is due to be refurbished shortly – completes the picture during the warmer months. Tucked away amidst the lush greenery of the City Park, this spacious garden serves as a cool, shady and infinitely peaceful oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the city by day, whilst in the evening it transforms into a decidedly romantic, elegantly lit and atmospheric space.
