Although progress is slow, we have at least reached the point where those wishing to eat a meat-free meal in a restaurant can choose from dishes other than fried cheese and salad, gluten-free or all-free alternatives are becoming available in more and more places, and wheelchair users can now find restaurants that are accessible to them and even equipped with special toilet facilities.

One of Budapest’s most renowned restaurants, Gundel in Városliget, has now opened its doors to guests with visual and hearing impairments: the waiting staff have learnt the ten most important sign language gestures in English and Hungarian, whilst visually impaired guests can choose from a Braille menu detailing the history of the dishes.

According to Jenő Magyary, managing director of Gundel, alongside its legendary hospitality, social responsibility and sensitivity have always been part of the core values of Gundel, which was founded in 1894, and have shaped the attitude of those who work here, which is now also evident in the care and attention shown to guests with visual and hearing impairments.
