Samu, the baby elephant, has joined the Gundel „family”
Children can now meet the soft toy version too
We have adopted one of the Budapest Zoo’s most popular residents, Samu, the baby elephant.
To mark this special occasion, we had previously organised a drawing competition, the winners of which were announced at the formal ceremony.
We also welcomed children for whom a visit to the zoo is a real treat – so that everyone can share in the joy!

The relationship between Gundel and the Zoo dates back more than 130 years, and our collaboration has always been excellent.
The two elephants featured in the Gundel Restaurant logo were incorporated into the brand’s identity, inspired by the stone elephants standing at the main entrance to the Zoo. The legendary emblem was designed by Milton Glaser, the creator of the „I ♥ NY” logo, whose work is closely intertwined with the history of Gundel. Glaser’s iconic graphic style aptly highlights Gundel’s uniqueness and traditions.
For us, adoption is more than just a symbolic gesture: we have been committed to social responsibility for many years.
For the formal adoption ceremony, the Hungarian Special Olympics Association (MSOSZ), the Csalogány Special Needs School in District III, and the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden hosted children and their carers for whom the visit to the zoo, the delicious Gundel pancake treats and the ceremony were a real treat and a source of joy.
At weekends, a soft toy elephant – also named Samu – awaits the little ones in the restaurant. This means that children visiting Gundel can have their photo taken with the mascot and get to know Samu’s friendly nature a little better.
The event was further enlivened by an art competition, to which more than 150 primary school pupils from 23 schools in the 14th district submitted their entries.
Using their imagination, the children envisaged how the elephant might feature in the world of Gundel.
The judging panel assessed creativity, original ideas and, of course, the incorporation of elements characteristic of Gundel.
