The legend lives on – Gundel returns to the Hungarian hospitality scene

Gundel reopened at 9 am on Wednesday morning! After a break of one and a half years, the restaurant has reopened with a revamped interior, whilst retaining its original mission, recipes and legendary hospitality.

From today, Gundel belongs to everyone once again! That was its original mission, and the new operator, the Eventrend Group, has returned to that. Gundel is now both a café and a restaurant, where you can pop in from 9 am for a coffee, breakfast, a good chat or a business meeting, whatever the time of day. In addition, the restaurant’s menu is available on the balcony at dinner time, served in the classic style: the famous Gundel specialities, presented on Zsolnay porcelain with silver cutlery and laid out in aristocratic style.

The backbone of Gundel’s menu was established 80 years ago; the current offering is built upon this, with the ‘Nemzeti11’ – that is, the eleven iconic Gundel dishes – forming its central element. Just as Károly Gundel staffed his kitchen with the most highly skilled professionals, who were careful not to overshadow the Gundel name, so too does the Eventrend Group strive to ensure to ensure that the Gundel chef can represent the Gundel legacy in a fitting manner. This is why the choice fell on Viktor Moldován, a great enthusiast of classic Hungarian cuisine and a highly knowledgeable young chef who ran a Hungarian restaurant in Japan for 14 years, during which time he mastered the highly disciplined and precise Japanese work culture and and work organisation. Viktor Moldován is assisted in his work by András Wolf, one of the Eventrend Group’s corporate chefs; in fact, the two of them lead the kitchen team together. Their work is supported by chef János Kovács and pastry chef Györgyné Dudok.

The pricing has also returned to the original concept: Károly Gundel once put it this way: „We’re not a cheap place”; the restaurant was indeed a little more expensive than run-of-the-mill eateries, but cheaper than its hotel counterparts. The same is true today: in the café, breakfast dishes start from 2,000 Ft, main courses from 4,000 Ft, and classic Gundel desserts from 2,000 Ft. In the restaurant section at dinner time, whilst you can choose freely from the à la carte menu, only 3- or 4-course set menus may be ordered; the 3-course menu costs 12,300 Ft, whilst the four-course menu costs 14,400 forints, served on Zsolnay porcelain with silver cutlery and a damask tablecloth.

In May 2021, the Eventrend Group took over the operation of the world-famous Gundel and Bagolyvár restaurants. The contract to this effect was signed at the end of January 2021 with representatives of the owner, Danubius Hotels.
