If you’re missing your mum’s home cooking: 7 places in Budapest where you’ll find flavours just like at home

Author: I Love Hungary

We were looking for places in Budapest where we could satisfy not only our hunger but also our longing for nostalgia.

The term „comfort food” means something different to every nation, but for us Hungarians it is most often synonymous with the atmosphere of family lunches, steaming meat soup or our favourite school canteen dishes from our childhood. These are the recipes we learnt from our parents and grandparents, and to which we have countless personal stories attached.

But we don’t always have time to cook these dishes for ourselves, and that’s when a reliable, traditional Hungarian restaurant comes in handy – a place where we can enjoy the flavours of home even on hectic weekdays.

The list includes elegant restaurants that are perfect for large family gatherings, as well as cosy eateries where you can pop in at any time during your lunch break for a bowl of hot food. What they all have in common is that their atmosphere draws you in straight away, and the flavours are exactly as we’re used to at home.

Gundel Restaurant

There are flavours that every Hungarian recognises instantly: the golden broth, the velvety sauce of chicken paprikash, or the chocolate layers of Somlói galuska. Gundel’s cuisine is built precisely on this fundamental experience. According to the restaurant’s philosophy, these dishes are not merely food, but represent home and care. Amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, when we have no time to spend hours in the kitchen, it is in the heart of Városliget that we can find that sense of tranquillity and those flavours familiar from childhood, which everyone has loved in the same way for generations.

The „Gundel Nemzeti 11” selection featured on the menu showcases the most fundamental common threads of Hungarian gastronomy.

A bowl of hearty Újházi chicken soup or chicken paprikash served with freshly torn nokedli instantly brings back the atmosphere of leisurely family meals. Chefs András Wolf and Róbert Vérten have crafted the menu so that traditional recipes are served with a fresh, contemporary twist, whilst retaining the classic character of dishes such as the Wiener schnitzel or palóc soup. Here, you’re not served a speciality, but rather the feeling that every mouthful holds the taste of home.

It is important to note that these iconic dishes form the cornerstone of the menu, so they are available every day. At the same time, Gundel’s Sunday family lunch is a separate concept with its own set menu, available every Sunday between 11.30 and 16.00. This set menu, featuring shared fried chicken and homemade apple strudel, is designed especially for those who wish to enjoy a special weekend lunch with several generations of their family in a time-honoured setting accompanied by live music.
